How do I increase the likelihood of being consistent with my exercise routine? I feel like I’ve tried to squeeze it in in every way possible but am still failing miserably.
~Anonymous
The struggle to maintain an active lifestyle that includes exercise is real. Long days are filled with work, kids, relationships and tend to feel packed enough as it is. But part of the problem is trying to squeeze exercise in versus making exercise a priority.
Starting the day without brushing one’s teeth is not an option. Skipping a child’s doctors appointment is unheard of. Catching a glimpse of a favorite TV show is often a nightly treat. But for some reason, making time for working out is placed at the bottom of the priority list time and time again. So the problem is not really that we don’t have the time, we have to make the time and make exercising a priority.
Time of Day
Being active first thing in the morning is best. If you start the day with exercise, it is less likely that that you will be too tired to exercise later. The day’s stressors, tasks and chores would have not had the opportunity to dampen your energy and vigor. Not only that, starting the day with exercise is an invigorating and energizing start to the day.
Make a Standing Appointment
Reserve a slot on your calender and treat it like a standing appointment with a friend. You wouldn’t flake out on a meeting you made with a friend, so don’t do it yourself. Go a step further and set an alarm reminder. Don’t dismiss the reminder until you have started your exercise or activity.
Make it Fun
If you are going to have any hope in being consistent in your exercise routine then, you have to make it fun. Exercise doesn’t look the same for everyone. There are so many different options out there these days. No longer does one need to have a gym membership to get fit so be creative.
Get involved in activities that you enjoy. Skating, dancing, swimming and even playing with your kids can burn lots of calories. Depending on the activity, more calories may even be burned than in a traditional exercise setting. Get a tracking device like Fitbit to keep you on track and to stay motivated.
Follow these tips and you will be well on your way to making exercise a consistent routine in your life.
